Recently, I have been comntemplating creating a series of improvised duets with me playing guitar or percussion alongside a self playing patch on my modular synthesizer (by self playing, I mean a patch that is generative and non-recurring based off of a noise source or some other “random” source.) When I first started thinking about it, I put the idea to the side. there is little point in improvising against a random source. Part of the joy of group improvisation lies in the synergy of the group and reacting to others’ actions while hearing them react to yours. This would be nothing more than solo improvisation with random notes coming from a synthesizer.

The more I thought about it; however, I realized that the experiment would actually be a worthwhile endeavor. The perceived randomness is only random because I do not know the equation for deriving the next tone (or when the next tone will occur.) There is no random. What we perceive as such only appears that way because of our inability to comprehend the base equation.

Take for instance if I were to create a computer program that generated a set of 10 “random” numbers. They would only appear random. If you knew the function being used and the initial values of the system (i.e. the seed for the random number generator), the “random” sequence would be repeatable over and over again.

But what if rather than using a computer, I used my own mind to generate the result set. It would be impossible with today’s technology to peer into the mind to determine the methodology used, but still the list would not be random, but only perceived as such. Everything generates from a complex system of equations.

Since everything at one time started from the same source and the same spark ignited everything into being, there is no random chance. While it may be next to impossible to derive the base equations for seeming randomness, it really is possible if it one were able to comprehend all of the variables involved.

This makes the experiment much more interesting to me. While I cannot comprehend or deduce the sequence of tones that the synthesizer will create, it will be enlightening to improvise together with a device that is simply playing without the filter of a human mind.
